Undisciplined Robots, talks and panel session organized within the program of SUPERFAB, 2022 Summer School.

The application of industrial robotics in design, architecture, and the arts is opening new opportunities for creative experimentations and cutting-edge industry projects. In this research territory, which is still to be fully explored, many questions raise when a creative and humanistic appropriation of industrial automation technologies takes place: which gaps should be addressed to empower a new generation of creators to design and develop solutions, experiences, artifacts with the use of robots?

Undisciplined Robots is a series of talks and a panel that aim to present recent projects in the realm of industrial robotics for design and architecture, to discuss how to nurture «undisciplined » collaborative environments, and how to identify the key gaps in this emergent sector.

Dr. Prof. Anna Valente, Head of the Laboratory for Automation, Robots and Machines with SUPSI DTI-ISTePS

Anna Valente is a Professor of Industrial Robotics. She got a Ph.D. in Manufacturing Technologies and Production Systems at Politecnico di Milano and a Post-doctorate in interoperability for adaptive factories from UBath, UK. Since 2006, she has been working in cooperation with big research institutions and industrial stakeholders operating in the manufacturing value chain. She is currently Head of the Laboratory for Automation, Robots and Machines with SUPSI-DTI-ISTePS where the core research deals with the design, engineering and prototyping up to TRL 7 industrial solutions integrating advanced process chains to realize high value added products. Dr. Ena Lloret-Fritschi, Assistant Professor - USI Academy of Architecture

Prof. Dr Ena Lloret-Fritschi is an architect with years of experience in digital concrete. In her new position at AAM-USI, she will lay the foundation for a future professorship in Fabrication- & Material-Aware Architecture, using cutting edge technology with cementitious materials. The goal is to develop design and fabrication tools that reveal the design potential of such digital fabrication processes to use fewer materials and thus move toward a more sustainable construction culture.Before joining the AAM-USI, Dr Lloret-Fritschi held a Postdoctoral position in Digital Fabrication, at the NCCR, ETH.

Massimo Banzi, co-founder di Arduino.cc

Massimo Banzi is the co-founder of Arduino. He is an Interaction Designer, Educator , Open Source Hardware pioneer and TED Speaker. He has a background in electrical engineering but spent most of his early career working as a software architect on large web projects both in Milan and London. He is a pioneer of the commercial web in Italy having been the Webmaster of Italia Online in its early years. He spent 4 years at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea as an Associate Professor and worked as a consultant on projects for brands like Prada, Persol, Whirlpool, V&A Museum, Artemide and Adidas. Romana Rust, associate researcher Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich

Dr. Romana Rust is a computational architect and senior researcher at Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich within the Design++ initiative – Centre for Augmented Computational Design in AEC. She is also Co-leader of the Immersive Design Lab, a lab for collaborative research and teaching in the field of extended reality and machine learning in architecture and construction. Her particular interest is the development of innovative computational methods that integrate multiple design objectives such as geometry, acoustics, materiality, and robotic fabrication. She is a member of the core developer team of COMPAS, the open-source computational framework for collaboration and research in architecture, structures, and digital fabrication.

Alain Bellet, associate professor at Ecal

Alain Bellet is a Designer and an Associate Professor in the Media & Interaction Design Program at ECAL. He led this program from 2006 to 2015. Through his teaching and research practice, he focuses on the relationship we have with technologies and the ways we interact with them. He splits his time between Lausanne and Zurich, where he lives and works on his own practice

Maria Smigielska is an architect and researcher with diverse experience in academia and practice, working at the intersection of design, digital fabrication and materials. Maria holds MSc degree in Architecture (TU Poznan) and MAS in Architecture and Information (ETH Zurich). Currently affiliated with the chair of Digital Building Technologies, ETH Zurich and ICDP HGK FHNW Basel. Formerly worked with Baierbischoferberger Architects, Creative Robotics UfG Linz, Digital Knowledge at ENSAPM.
